Gas Main Bypass Installation – Willis Building

Olympus Mechanical Services upgraded the gas infrastructure at a commerical location by installing a 6-inch bypass line. This improvement allows safe isolation of gas boosters for maintenance and boosts seasonal efficiency. Our team prefabricated the system off-site and completed the installation over a single weekend to avoid disrupting the client’s operations.

Project Introduction

The existing system required booster operation throughout the year, even when demand was lower. By installing a bypass in the gas main, the system can now operate without gas boosters during the summer months, reducing energy use and simplifying maintenance.

Planning and Preparation

To minimise downtime, all prefabrication was completed in our hot works workshop ahead of the installation. Our engineers attended site to carry out precise measurements, which were then used to fabricate pipework, valves, and purge points off-site. This ensured that when our team returned, everything was ready for immediate installation.

Controlled Purging and Safety

Before works could commence, the gas system was fully purged using a purge fan and flare stack setup. This allowed any residual gas to be safely burned off in a controlled environment, verified using specialist detection equipment. Once the system was proven gas-free, cutting into the pipework could begin safely.

Consideration Of Environment

This is a clean, well-kept, listed building. The in-house maintenance team supports everything that Olympus does, and we have a great relationship with them. We have to be extremely careful whenever we work within this environment.

This relationship has been won with the high standards of not just the work we do, but how we prepare, execute and provide after care and make sure everything is as clean and well presented as when we started the work.

No Occupancy Disruption, Saturday/Sunday project.

The bypass installation was completed over a weekend to avoid disruption to normal operations. Thanks to the detailed preparation and prefabrication work, the on-site installation was carried out efficiently, ensuring minimal downtime for the client.

Ahead of time, and a happy customer.

The new bypass provides full isolation for the gas boosters during maintenance, while allowing the system to run efficiently from the standard supply during lower-demand periods. This not only reduces operational costs but also improves the long-term maintainability of the system.
