We Love the Smell of Freshly Painted Gas Main

Temporary Accommodation: Gas Main Upsizing and Boiler Resilience Project

Completed 3 months ahead of time.

Project Overview

Discovered issues - resolved.

Installed gas main upsizing pipework with welded steel gas line, isolation valves, and boiler control panel mounted on brick wall.

This project involved upsizing the gas main after a relocation revealed the existing supply was undersized. The scope covered design, prefabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning within tightly controlled outage windows to maintain continuity of service on site.

  • Pipe size upgrade: from 2″ (50 mm) to 4″ (100 mm).
  • Fabrication: fully welded, tested, and painted carbon steel line.
  • Safety hardware: installation of isolating valves and a solenoid valve that automatically closes on fire alarm signal, shutting off gas to the boilers.
  • Off-site hot works: all welding and primary fabrication completed in Olympus’s prefabrication shop to improve quality and reduce on-site risk.
  • Programme:
    • Manufacture: 3 days (off-site).
    • Installation: 1 day (on-site).
    • Gas outage: 4 hours total, including strip-out, install, test, and purge.
    • Commissioning: system tested and purged prior to return to service.

We installed the new gas main, with only four hours downtime.

Project Objectives

Eliminate undersized gas supply constraints following boiler relocation.

Enhance system resilience and ensure stable boiler operation.

Minimise downtime during changeover to protect residents and service uptime.

Implement compliant, safety-led gas engineering with full testing and purging.

Scope of Works

Design and engineering of a new gas main from the incoming meter to the boilers.

Upsizing from a 2″ (50 mm) line to a 4″ (100 mm) fully welded gas main.

Prefabrication of pipework and supports off-site to reduce hot works on site.

Installation of isolation valves and fire-alarm-linked solenoid shut-off.

Structural modifications: bracketry, wall penetrations, and protective painting.

Removal of the old pipework and seamless integration of the new main.

Full testing, purging, and recommissioning.

Safety, Compliance, and Quality

Commitment to Excellence

  • Works completed in line with Gas Safe principles and industry best practice.
  • System testing and purging carried out prior to re-energising the gas supply.
  • Fire safety integration via solenoid shut-off tied to the fire alarm.
  • Quality assurance through off-site prefabrication and controlled installation.
